City in West Bengal, India
Chandannagar
Chandannagar ([t͡ʃɔnd̪ɔnnɔɡoɾ]), also known by its former names Chandernagor and Chandernagore, is a city in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is headquarter of the Chandannagore subdivision and is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Established by the French in 1673, the city became a permanent French settlement in 1688. Chandannagar became a thriving centre for trade reagarding opium, indigo, silk etc. The city was initally a major cause of rivalry between the French and the British and had changed hands a number of times as a result. It was finally handed over to the French who ruled it until 1952. Since British laws did not apply here, many Indian freedom fighters and revolutionaries used to take refuge in the city to evade the British.
