Telangana (Telugu: TAY-luhng-gah-nnuh, Urdu: TIH-luhng-gah-nuh) sits at the heart of the Deccan, shaped by rugged hills, rocky landscapes, and ancient boulders scattered across its terrain. According to one popular theory, the name "Telangana" is derived from the name of a region called Tṛliṇgadeśa (त्रिलिङ्गदेश) in Sanskrit, meaning the "land of three lingams", and the region is said to be home to 3 prominent Shaivite shrines: Kaleshwaram (in present-day Telangana), Srisailam and Daksharamam (both in present-day Andhra Pradesh). One of the earliest use of the name is in the name of Malik Maqbul Tilangani in the 14th century, who was the commander of the Warangal Fort, and later vizier of Delhi Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq. During the Nizam rule of Hyderabad, the name "Telangana" referred to the Telugu-speaking region of his dominion, just like its Marathi-speaking region was called Marathwada. Telangana's history is marked by a succession of dynasties and cultural influences.
